The Battle of Iwo Jima

Today in 1945, five Marines and a U.S. Navy Corpsman raised an American flag at the summit of Mount Suribachi on Iwo Jima after four days of some of the most intense fighting of WWII. The photo of this moment is one of the most memorable images of the war and served as the basis for the Marine Corps War Memorial.

  1. Those men were so brave. They fought for all of your freedom we take for granted today.

  3. I like playing Axis & Allies (the board game). It's like risk but there is a lot more to combat. You mix and match infantry, artillery, tanks, jets, bombers, and different navy ships. Battle wounds occur simultaneously. And it's always interesting to see where things go when players take their own paths.
